OurClone FAQ

What is OurClone?

OurClone is a data synchronization and backup software designed to facilitate cloud data transfer, local data backup, and management of cloud storage mounts.

Is OurClone Safe?

Yes, OurClone uses SSL encryption with the AES-256 protocol to protect uploaded files. This level of encryption is highly effective in safeguarding against various online threats.

OurClone’s backup repository also features strong encryption, and access to the backup storage is restricted without the access password. Repository passwords are stored encrypted at rest, tied to your device, instead of in plain text.

Does Data Transfer with OurClone Affect Local Internet Speed?

Yes, while data transfer is happening, all data will only be transmitted on your PC. Since it uses local bandwidth, it may impact the local internet speed during data transfers.

Is OurClone a Free Product?

Yes, OurClone offers a free version that meets the basic needs of users. If you find it useful, you can purchase the Pro version of OurClone for enhanced functionality and dedicated technical support.

What do I need before mounting a cloud drive?

Mounting depends on a platform driver: on Windows, install WinFsp first; on macOS, OurClone uses the system NFS mount path, and macFUSE is used for the classic FUSE mount mode. Sync, transfer, and backup features work without any of these — the prerequisite only applies to mounting.

Does OurClone keep running in the background?

Yes. Closing the window minimizes OurClone to the system tray, so active mounts and scheduled tasks keep running. You can also enable “start at login” in Settings so OurClone launches into the tray when you sign in, and desktop notifications tell you when a transfer or backup finishes or fails. Quitting from the tray menu safely unmounts all active mounts first.

Can I encrypt my files before they reach the cloud?

Yes. With an encrypted remote (a Pro feature built on rclone crypt), OurClone creates an encrypted vault inside any cloud storage you have connected. File names and contents are encrypted on your computer before upload, and only encrypted data is stored in the cloud. Keep the vault password safe — without it, the data cannot be recovered.

Can I manage files directly on my cloud drives?

Yes. The Manage page includes a file manager: browse folders, upload local files, download files to your computer, rename, delete, and create folders. Uploads and downloads run as tasks in the Task Center so you can watch their progress.

Does OurClone clean up old backup snapshots automatically?

Yes. Each backup repository can have a retention policy — keep the last N snapshots, plus N daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly snapshots. Turn on auto-apply and OurClone runs the cleanup after every successful backup, so a repository does not grow forever. This is a rule for which snapshots to keep, separate from how often a backup job runs.
